Organised Labour has called on President Bola Tinubu to reverse what it describes as the unconstitutional suspension of the elected government in Rivers State through a state of emergency. The demand was made by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress during May Day celebrations at Eagle Square, Abuja.
Labour leaders Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo also warned against shrinking the civic space and called for democratic accountability, electoral reform, and protection of citizens’ rights. They urged an end to killings and insecurity across Nigeria, stressing that the government’s top priority must be safeguarding lives and property.

The unions rejected proposed tax bills at the National Assembly, saying they were drafted without worker input and disproportionately target workers while sparing the wealthy. Labour also condemned the hike in telecom tariffs, calling for a reduction from 50 to 35 percent.
Other demands include salary adjustments in line with inflation, payment of outstanding allowances and pensions, restoration of gratuity, and a review of retirement age and pension systems to reflect current economic realities.
