Obi, Atiku Salute Workers’ Resilience on May Day

The 2023 presidential candidates of the Labour Party and the PDP, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, have paid tribute to Nigerian workers as the country marked International Workers’ Day. Both leaders praised the resilience and dedication of workers in the face of economic and political challenges.

Peter Obi described Nigerian workers as the engine behind national growth, despite what he called severe economic hardship. He warned that unemployment and underemployment—now over 35 percent—pose a serious threat, particularly among young people. Obi called for investment in education, health, and small businesses to address the crisis and shift the nation from consumption to production.

Atiku Abubakar, in his message, said the Nigerian worker remains the backbone of national prosperity. He criticised policy makers for failing to support workers with adequate policies and called for the labour force to be treated as equal partners in the nation’s development.

Both men emphasised the need for policies that protect the rights and welfare of workers, while advocating for fair wages, job creation and greater recognition of the role of labour in Nigeria’s future.
