Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have asked the Senate to lift the lifetime immunity of former President Joseph Kabila to allow him face trial on serious charges including war crimes, treason, and support for a rebel uprising.
Justice Minister Constant Mutamba says the government has gathered clear evidence implicating Kabila in massacres and an armed insurrection in the country’s volatile eastern region.
The allegations stem from claims that Kabila backed the M23 rebels, who have captured key cities and displaced millions. The former leader, who ruled the DRC from 2001 to 2019, has denied the accusations.
Kabila’s party has dismissed the move as political persecution, while tensions and fighting persist in eastern provinces despite calls for a ceasefire.
