Ebola cases in DR Congo surpass 1,000 amid violence, displacement

The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen above 1,000, health authorities said, as violence and mass displacement continue to undermine efforts to contain the outbreak. The figures were released on Sunday, 22 June 2026, by the country’s Ministry of Health.

Officials say 1,003 people have been infected and 254 have died since the outbreak was declared on 15 May in Ituri province in the northeast of the country. A further 100 people have recovered, while at least 365 patients remain in hospital or isolation.

The ministry said contact tracing has reached only about 55 per cent of potential exposures, warning that many cases may still be undetected. Health officials also said insecurity linked to armed groups has restricted access to affected communities and slowed response operations.

The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Authorities warned that the peak of the epidemic may not yet have been reached as displacement camps continue to face worsening health risks.
