FCT Minister Confirms Visit from Suspended Rivers Governor Fubara and APC Governors

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has begun making moves to reconcile. Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Mr Wike confirmed that Mr Fubara, accompanied by two All Progressives Congress governors and an elder statesman, visited him as part of efforts to resolve their political differences.

The rift between the two leaders plunged Rivers State into a prolonged political crisis, culminating in the suspension of Governor Fubara, the State House of Assembly, and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu by President Bola Tinubu. The President later appointed a state administrator to oversee governance in the oil-rich state for six months — a move that drew mixed reactions nationwide.

Mr Wike, who governed Rivers State for eight years, said although he welcomed the peace initiative, Mr Fubara must take further steps to demonstrate his sincerity. He cited ongoing protests and public insults from the governor’s supporters as actions that undermine the reconciliation effort, and questioned whether the suspended governor had reached out to state lawmakers and other key political figures.

He also accused unnamed governors of misleading Mr Fubara at the height of the political turmoil, stating that those same governors have since distanced themselves. Wike described Fubara as a young man who ignored earlier warnings about political missteps.
