The Senate on Tuesday called for urgent amendments to the composition of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) to include representatives of Local Government Areas, LGAs, and Area Councils.
The motion, tabled during plenary by Senator Jibrin Isah on behalf of Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, seeks to align FAAC’s structure with recent constitutional interpretations delivered by the Supreme Court.

Lawmakers cited Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which recognises LGAs as the third tier of government, and Section 162(3), which entitles them to direct allocations from the Federation Account.
The Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling in July 2024, held that state governments hold no proprietary rights over LGA funds.
The Senate urged the Federal Government to ensure one LGA representative per state and the FCT sits on FAAC. A resolution is to be communicated to the Minister of Finance and referred to the House for concurrence.
