Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has called for continued commitment to democracy, insisting that military rule must remain in the past.
Speaking in Abuja at the unveiling of a book titled ‘Military Factor in Nigerian History, 1960–2018’, General Gowon acknowledged the complex legacy of the armed forces, describing their role in Nigeria’s history as neither entirely heroic nor villainous.
The event, organised by the Historical Society of Nigeria to mark its 70th anniversary, highlighted the military’s deep involvement in shaping the country’s trajectory.

The former Head of State noted that while past regimes contributed to peace and national development, the military must now strengthen its support for democratic governance and integrate more fully with civilian institutions.
He also emphasised the need for a modern, intelligence-led force capable of tackling Nigeria’s current security challenges and enhancing regional stability.
The military, he said, should serve as a unifying pillar within the nation’s democratic framework.
