The Senate has opened an investigative hearing into alleged breaches of the Federal Character Principle in recruitment across federal ministries and agencies.
Led by the Senate Committee on Federal Character, the probe aims to examine compliance with constitutional requirements for equitable regional representation in public appointments.
Lawmakers voiced strong concerns over ongoing imbalances and signalled their intention to amend existing legislation to close loopholes and enforce accountability.

Committee chairman warned heads of invited agencies, including the Nigeria Customs Service, that failure to appear before the panel would attract sanctions.
The inquiry follows rising public dissatisfaction over perceived marginalisation in federal hiring practices. Senators stressed the urgency of addressing the lopsidedness, pledging to impose penalties where necessary to uphold national cohesion and fairness.
Deliberations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
