President Tinubu to Attend Papal Inauguration in Rome

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Saturday for Rome to attend the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo 14th, following an invitation from the Vatican.

The ceremony, scheduled for Sunday, 18 May, at St Peter’s Square, marks the official installation of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the 267th Bishop of Rome and the first American to assume the papacy.

The President will be accompanied by senior Catholic leaders, including Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, Bishop Matthew Kukah, and Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.

Pope Leo 14th, who previously served in Nigeria during the 1980s, described the country as “particularly dear” to him.

His ascension comes 17 days after the passing of Pope Francis.

The Vatican described the Mass as a moment of deep significance amid global tensions.

President Tinubu is expected back in Abuja on Tuesday, 20 May.
