Nigeria’s food price index recorded a 2.4% decline in April, driven by falling costs of staples such as maize, wheat, okro, yam flour, and soybeans, according to fresh data released Thursday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The report indicates that on a year-on-year basis, food inflation dropped from 40.53% in April 2024 to 21.26% this year. Month-on-month, inflation eased slightly from 21.79% in March.

Major contributors to the decline include rice, bambara beans, and brown beans.
State-by-state figures show Benue recorded the steepest food inflation at 51.76%, followed by Ekiti and Kebbi. In contrast, the lowest increases were noted in Ebonyi with 7.19%, Adamawa at 9.52%, and Ogun sitting at 9.91%.
The NBS figures offer a modest sign of relief for households, although food prices remain high in several regions.
