Spain’s Foreign Minister has called for international sanctions on Israel in a bid to halt its military campaign in Gaza, as Madrid prepares to host high-level talks involving European and Arab nations on Sunday.
The meeting—part of the “Madrid Group” diplomatic format—comes amid mounting global concern over rising Palestinian casualties and the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s intensified military operations, following the Hamas-led attack of 7 October 2023, have left much of Gaza devastated. Aid agencies say a near-total blockade has severely restricted access to food, water, fuel, and medicine.

Despite Israeli assurances to ease restrictions, the UN has described the limited aid entering Gaza as “a drop in the ocean.”
Spain is hosting 20 countries and several international bodies in a renewed push to “stop a war that no longer has any clear objective,” officials say.
The talks are expected to feed into a UN-led peace summit in June.
