PDP Leadership Warns of Expulsions Amid Deepening Internal Crisis

The acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Umar Damagum, has warned that members stoking division within the party risk expulsion.

Speaking in Abuja at its National Executive Committee, NEC meeting—the first since April 2024—Mr Damagum said the party would no longer tolerate indiscipline as it prepares for its national convention later this year.

The PDP’s NEC, its highest decision-making body, includes state governors, current and former presidents, senior lawmakers, and party elders. Despite constitutional provisions for quarterly meetings, internal rifts have delayed proceedings since 2022.

The party has seen defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress amid persistent factional disputes. Damagum insisted, however, that the PDP has the internal structures to resolve its challenges.

Board of Trustees Chair, Senator Adolphus Wabara, urged members to reposition the party as a credible alternative, not merely as critics, but as a genuine force for national renewal.
