The Supreme Court has nullified the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025. In a split decision on Thursday, three of the five justices dismissed an appeal by a faction of the party led by Tanimu Turaki.
Delivering the majority judgment, Justice Stephen Adah held that the appellants acted in violation of a subsisting order of a Federal High Court, which had restrained the party from conducting the convention. The court said the appellants proceeded in disregard of the order rather than challenge it through proper legal channels.
The dispute arose from a suit filed by former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, who argued he was denied the opportunity to contest for the party’s national chairmanship. A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, had issued an order restraining the convention, which was later upheld by the Court of Appeal.

In a dissenting judgment, Justice Simon Tsammani, supported by another justice, ruled that the issue of disobedience to a court order was not raised by the parties and that the lower court lacked jurisdiction over internal party matters. However, the majority ruling upheld the earlier decisions and dismissed the appeal.
