Nigerian Pilgrim Returns $5,000 to Russian Owner in Makkah

A pilgrim, identified as Hajiya Zainab from Plateau State, has been commended for returning a lost sum of \$5,000 to its rightful owner—a Russian national—at the Masjidul Haram in Makkah.

The incident occurred on Tuesday during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage. Officials from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the Plateau State Pilgrims Welfare Board confirmed the act, praising the pilgrim’s honesty.

The Chairman of the Plateau Board, Honourable Daiyabu Dauda, described Hajiya Zainab’s conduct as a “remarkable act of integrity,” adding that her decision to return the funds—equivalent to over ₦8.2 million at prevailing rates—was a shining example of the values expected of Muslim faithful.

The Russian recipient has since been reunited with the missing money.

Officials say the gesture has resonated widely, with many calling it a timely reminder of moral responsibility during the sacred pilgrimage.
