WAEC Boss Apologises Over Exam Delays, Cites Paper Leak and Printing Crisis

The Head of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, in Nigeria, Mr. Amos Dangut, has apologised for the chaotic conduct of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, admitting that last-minute reprints following question leaks led to English Language papers being written as late as 9 p.m. in poor lighting.

Appearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education, Dr Dangut revealed the Council’s internal press operated at just 50% capacity, forcing reliance on third-party vendors and triggering logistical failures.

Lawmakers, led by Committee Chair Oboku Oforji, described the situation as a national embarrassment, demanding full disclosure from WAEC to prevent future lapses.

Mr. Dangut defended the Council’s efforts, saying replacement papers were distributed overnight and denied that students were abandoned, noting that schools improvised with torches and candles.

The committee insists the probe is not a witch-hunt, but a necessary step toward accountability and reform.
