The Federal Government says there’s no going back on plans to move WAEC and NECO exams to Computer-Based Testing by 2026. In an interview monitored by RadioNow’s news desk, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said the move is aimed at curbing widespread exam malpractice and restoring integrity to Nigeria’s education system.
According to the Minister, objective sections of both WAEC and NECO will go digital by November 2025, with full CBT implementation, including essay papers by May/June 2026.

He noted that while JAMB has nearly eliminated cheating through CBT and strict security, WAEC and NECO still face serious challenges. Alausa blamed this gap for the sharp contrast in student performance across exams, saying over 1.5 million UTME candidates recently scored below 200 out of 400.
He warned that cheating destroys merit and discourages hard working students, and said ‘miracle centres’ are corrupting the system.
The Minister confirmed that a diagnostic review of exam systems was completed, and that WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS have all been consulted.
