Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared that Tehran will not abandon its uranium enrichment programme, dismissing a central demand from the United States in ongoing nuclear talks. Khamenei made the comments in a speech marking the death anniversary of the Islamic Republic’s founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
He said the US proposal to limit or halt enrichment in exchange for lifting Western sanctions contradicted Iran’s commitment to self-reliance and the principles of the 1979 Islamic revolution. Khamenei stressed that uranium enrichment is essential for the country’s energy independence.
Khamenei criticised the US stance, saying it was against Iran’s national interests and that Tehran would not seek Washington’s approval for its actions. He also warned against any suggestion that Iran’s national sovereignty should be compromised in the pursuit of a deal.
The issue of uranium enrichment has been a key sticking point in the negotiations, with Western powers pushing for limits to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.
