Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o has revealed her decade-long struggle with uterine fibroids, urging an end to the silence and normalisation of women’s pain.
In a series of Instagram posts to mark Fibroid Awareness Month, the Oscar-winning star said she was diagnosed with 30 fibroids in 2014—the same year she won an Academy Award. She said fibroids affect the majority of Black and white women by age 50, yet remain under-discussed.

Nyong’o announced a partnership with US lawmakers to introduce bills aimed at increasing funding for research, early detection and public awareness of uterine fibroids.
She also launched a research grant in partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Health, to support the development of less invasive treatments for the condition, which affects an estimated 15 million women in the United States.
