NIMC Denies Involvement in Sale of Personal Data

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has denied reports linking it to the alleged sale of personal data such as Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) and National Identity Numbers (NIN) to Fintech firms. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commission described the claims as false and condemned any unauthorised use of personal information.

The Commission’s response follows recent comments by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which raised alarm over a growing fraud scheme where individuals reportedly collect personal details from victims and sell them for as little as ₦5,000. NIMC said it should not be held liable for any data voluntarily shared by citizens for financial gain.

It warned Nigerians against disclosing their NIN to unauthorised individuals or organisations, stressing that any NIN used to access services must first be verified. The Commission reiterated that it has consistently advised the public to safeguard their identity information.

NIMC also encouraged Nigerians to download the NINAuth App from Apple or Google Play Stores, noting that the app enhances control, privacy and protection over personal information linked to the NIN.
