Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged swift action to curb recurring tanker fire accidents, describing them as a major threat to Lagos. Speaking at the Lagos State International Fire Safety Conference in Victoria Island, he revealed that property worth N19.52bn was lost to fires in 2024.
The event, organised by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, brought together stakeholders to explore technology and community-led prevention measures. The governor said initiatives such as ‘Safety on the Move’ and intensified public sensitisation were underway.

Commissioner Olugbenga Oyerinde reaffirmed the government’s resolve to achieve “zero fire incidents.” Fire chief Margaret Adeseye reported 1,952 fire cases in 2024, down from 2,573 the previous year, with property worth N117.12bn saved. She stressed that fire safety is not about equipment but about people.
