The Ogun State government has announced August 20 as a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day, dedicated to celebrating Yoruba religion and traditions.
The decision was confirmed in Abeokuta by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun. The holiday was first recognised in 2023 after approval by the State Assembly and the governor.

Officials say the commemoration reflects the administration’s recognition of the importance of Yoruba heritage in shaping Ogun’s cultural identity. Isese Day provides an opportunity for adherents to honour ancestors, practise traditional rites, and promote values rooted in their spiritual beliefs.
The government added that the celebration strengthens community bonds among practitioners while encouraging wider society to appreciate the Yoruba contribution to Nigeria’s cultural landscape.
Public activities to mark the day are expected across the state.
