A member of the House of Representatives, Bashir Gorau, says 26 people have been rescued following a boat accident in Sokoto State. The boat, carrying more than 50 passengers to a market, capsized on Sunday morning.
Mr Gorau explained that 25 men and one woman were among those rescued. He added that local leaders, including the Sarkin Ruwa, were working with authorities to recover more people.

The National Emergency Management Agency had earlier indicated that about 40 passengers were feared dead. Mr Gorau however said there was no confirmed figure of the missing, stressing that assumptions had been made based on early reports.
He described the incident as part of a recurring problem linked to poor safety practices on waterways. Similar tragedies have occurred in Sokoto and other states, including Kwara, where dozens of lives were lost in recent years.
