The Academic Staff Union of Universities in Lagos has called on the Federal Government to pay lecturers a living wage rather than the national minimum wage. Zonal Coordinator, Adesola Nassir, made the demand at a press conference at the University of Lagos.
The call came two days after ASUU members staged a peaceful protest at the institution, highlighting outstanding salaries, promotion arrears, and unpaid wage awards. Nassir said several meetings with government agencies had produced no payment to date.

He warned that the union could embark on a nationwide strike at any time and insisted Nigerians should hold the government responsible for any disruption. Nassir also accused the government of undermining university autonomy by releasing funds directly to staff instead of through the institutions.
On the government’s new Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund, Nassir argued that the scheme, meant to provide financial support for academics, had been converted into loans that were largely inaccessible to members.
