The International Association of Genocide Scholars has adopted a resolution declaring that Israel’s actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide. The association cited the UN Genocide Convention, arguing that military operations launched after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, have gone beyond targeting militants and instead struck the civilian population.
The resolution, supported by 86% of members, accuses Israel of committing widespread crimes against humanity, forcibly displacing almost all 2.3 million Gazans, and destroying most housing infrastructure. Its president, Melanie O’Brien, said the vote reflected consensus among experts in genocide studies.

Israel has rejected the finding, with its Foreign Ministry dismissing it as an embarrassment to legal scholarship and accusing Hamas of orchestrating misinformation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously described genocide allegations as “ridiculous.”
The Palestinian Government Media Office welcomed the resolution, describing it as long overdue international recognition.
