Afrobeat Star Femi Kuti Opens Up on Breaking from Father’s Shadow

Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti has spoken about the pressure he faced to live up to the legacy of his father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He said he eventually left Fela’s band to discover his own artistic identity.

In an interview on the Afropolitan podcast, the 63-year-old musician said he had led his father’s band for two years while Fela was in prison, but realised he needed to build a life of his own.

Femi explained that he turned down offers, including a tripled salary to join Fela’s US tour, saying the move was crucial for his independence.

He recalled facing backlash from fans and the press at the time, but said leaving allowed him to form his own band and establish himself outside of his father’s influence.
