The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare and recognition of teachers across Nigeria as the nation joins the global community to mark the 2025 World Teachers’ Day.

Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, and Minister of State for Education, Prof Suwaiba Said Ahmad, gave the assurance at a symposium in Abuja ahead of the official celebration on Sunday. This year’s global theme is “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession.”

World Teachers’ Day, first proclaimed in 1994 by UNESCO in partnership with the International Labour Organisation, Education International and UNICEF, is held annually to honour teachers and highlight their role in shaping society. It traces its origins to the 1966 ILO-UNESCO recommendation on the status of teachers.

Dr Alausa commended Nigerian teachers as “custodians of knowledge” and pledged better packages, training and support for the profession. He stressed that collaboration among teachers enhances student learning and assured continued government support for their development.
