Tinubu Warns: Stolen Minerals Threaten Peace and Stability in the Region

President Bola Tinubu has urged West African leaders to classify resource theft, illegal mining, and mineral smuggling as international crimes, describing them as major threats to peace and development in the region.

Speaking in Abuja through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the President said decades after independence, corruption and the plundering of mineral wealth continue to erode the region’s progress. He was addressing the Annual General Meeting of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa, NACIWA.

President Tinubu called for stronger regional cooperation to dismantle criminal networks benefiting from illegal mining and resource theft. He warned that unchecked exploitation of natural resources fuels insecurity and undermines efforts to build stable, prosperous economies across West Africa.
