Bauchi Creates 29 New LGAs, Awaits National Assembly Approval

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has signed into law a bill creating 29 additional local government areas in the state. This move increases the number of LGAs from 20 to 49, pending approval by the National Assembly.

A document obtained by Daily Trust shows that the Bauchi State House of Assembly has forwarded the law to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review for ratification as part of the ongoing amendment process.

The Acting Deputy Clerk of the Assembly, Musa Yerima, in a letter to the committee chairman, Senator Barau Jibrin, explained that the new LGAs will remain inchoate until the National Assembly enacts a law recognising them in line with Section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution.

He added that the bill was passed in compliance with constitutional provisions, with the state government saying the creation of new councils aims to bring governance closer to the people in the state of about 10 million residents.
