Bala Mohammed Hosts Obi in Bauchi, Signals Shift in Political Alignments

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on Thursday received Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, alongside a delegation of South East leaders at the Government House in Bauchi. The meeting, described as a courtesy visit, comes at a time of growing political realignments among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The visit follows a series of high-level engagements by the governor amid the ongoing leadership crisis within the People’s Democratic Party. In recent weeks, Mohammed has hosted prominent figures across party lines, including members of the African Democratic Congress and the All Progressives Congress. On March 31, he met with ADC leaders such as former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and later held talks with APC national chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.

During Thursday’s meeting, the governor described the engagement as both symbolic and significant, emphasising the need for partnership, cooperation, and renewed political balance in the country. He noted that Peter Obi has maintained consistent engagement with institutions in Bauchi, including visits to health and education facilities, and said the latest meeting reflects a broader commitment to dialogue among political actors.

Mohammed indicated that discussions centred on alignment and future collaboration, describing his current political stance as independent while awaiting judicial clarity on party matters. He said the ongoing consultations are part of efforts to build consensus and strengthen a platform for national progress, as opposition figures continue to explore new pathways for unity and reform.
