NERC Reports 70,888 New Customers Metered in August as Nigeria Seeks to Close Electricity Gap

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has reported that electricity distribution companies, known as DisCos, metered 70,888 new customers in August 2025, slightly down from 76,783 in July. The development forms part of ongoing efforts to close the nation’s metering gap.

According to NERC’s Metering Factsheet for July and August, the total number of active customers across all DisCos rose from 11.89 million to 11.96 million, with 6.58 million now metered, pushing the metering rate to 55.01 per cent. Top-performing DisCos include Ikeja with 84.83%, Eko recorded 84.25%, and Abuja with 73.92%.

NERC recently approved N28 billion under Tranche B of the Meter Asset Facility scheme to accelerate metering for unmetered Band A and B customers, enhancing billing accuracy and transparency nationwide.
