Police Fire Teargas as Rival PDP Factions Clash at Abuja Headquarters

Police have fired teargas at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja following violent clashes between supporters of rival factions involved in an escalating leadership crisis. The unrest broke out at Wadata Plaza as two groups attempted to assert control of the party’s structures.

Tension escalated when Governor Seyi Makinde, Governor Bala Mohammed and the Turaki-led executive arrived, prompting confrontations with police officers and supporters loyal to Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who attempted to block their entry to the complex. Heavy security had been deployed earlier as both factions planned parallel meetings at the same venue.

Senator Anyanwu, whose group was first to arrive, restated that he remains the party’s national secretary until his tenure expires in December. He took up work in his office and said the presence of security personnel was consistent with the party’s practice during major meetings.

He added that the deployment was also intended to prevent what he described as intruders, a reference to the Turaki-led faction that had also announced plans to convene at the headquarters.
