A proposal to amend Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution and reduce the minimum age for contesting governorship and Senate seats from 35 to 30 has passed second reading in the House of Representatives. The bill, sponsored by Esin Martin Etim and 24 other lawmakers, seeks to expand political opportunities for younger Nigerians.
Under current law, candidates may enter the House of Representatives at 25 but must wait a further ten years before seeking higher office. Etim argued that this gap restricts the career progression of young legislators who complete two terms before turning 35, yet remain ineligible for senior positions.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas put the proposal to a voice vote, which received broad support. The bill has now been referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further consideration.
