Regional Observers Condemn Military Takeover in Guinea-Bissau

Election observer missions from the African Union, ECOWAS and the West African Elders Forum have voiced deep concern after Guinea-Bissau’s armed forces suspended the electoral process and announced a takeover. In a joint statement, the missions described the move as a deliberate attempt to derail the country’s progress toward stability and undermine democratic institutions.

Observers said both the presidential and legislative polls, held on 23 November, had been peaceful and orderly, with strong voter participation and professional conduct by election officials and security personnel. They warned that the coup has interrupted what had been a credible process and condemned the arrest of senior officials, calling for their immediate release.

The intervention came hours after gunfire was heard near the electoral commission. The missions urged regional bodies to act swiftly to restore constitutional order.
