ADC Urges Ex-INEC Chairman to Reject Ambassadorial Appointment

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is calling on former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Mahmood Yakubu to reject a recent ambassadorial nomination.

The former INEC chair was nominated by President Bola Tinubu alongside 31 others who are expected to be screened by the Senate.

The ADC argues that appointing Yakubu who led the 2023 election that brought the current administration to power to a diplomatic post so soon after leaving office would damage the perceived neutrality and credibility of INEC.

The party described the entire list of nominees as “a settlement of political IOUs,” and cautioned that such appointments risk turning the electoral umpire into a “political beneficiary.”

The ADC also urged the Senate to reject the list, warning that failure to do so could undermine future election integrity and public trust.
