Lagos Pardons 91 Inmates To Mark Human Rights Day

The Lagos State Government has approved the release and sentence computation of 91 convicted inmates as part of activities marking the 2025 UN Human Rights Day. According to officials, 80 of the beneficiaries will be released immediately under the state’s power of clemency.

Announcing the decision, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, said the inmates had each served more than 70 per cent of their sentences. He addressed a joint press conference of the Ministry of Justice and the Directorate of Citizens’ Rights.

Mr. Pedro highlighted the directorate’s work over the past year, noting that it received about 1,950 petitions and successfully resolved 1,200 cases through mediation. He said the unit currently handles around 50 fundamental rights cases, including matters related to alleged police misconduct, unlawful detention and property disputes.
