Lagos bans petroleum tankers from transporting edible oil

The Lagos State Government has banned the use of petroleum tankers in the transportation and distribution of edible oil as part of efforts to strengthen food safety and consumer protection.

The restriction was announced in a statement by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Marketers and Sellers of Edible Oil Association of Nigeria, the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners, and the Association of Edible Oil Tanker Drivers of Nigeria.

Authorities said the policy is aimed at preventing contamination caused by chemical residues left in tankers previously used for transporting fuel and other hazardous substances. Under the agreement, only certified food-grade tankers will be permitted for edible oil transportation.

The agency said the new framework includes tanker registration, inspections, laboratory testing of edible oil samples, and joint enforcement operations. It added that stricter monitoring and enforcement measures would be carried out under the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency Law, 2025.
