United States President Donald Trump has imposed a partial travel restriction on Nigeria, citing security concerns and difficulties in vetting travellers. The measure was announced in a White House proclamation signed on Tuesday and is due to take effect in January 2026, affecting both immigrant and non-immigrant travel categories.
According to the proclamation, Nigerians seeking entry to the United States on B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M and J visas will face a suspension, while the validity of other non-immigrant visas may be reduced. The White House said the decision followed a review by the Secretary of State, in consultation with senior security and intelligence officials.
President Trump said the move was informed by concerns over the activities of extremist groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State in parts of Nigeria, as well as visa overstay rates. US data cited Nigeria’s B-1 and B-2 visa overstay rate at 5.56 percent, and 11.9 percent for student and exchange visas.

Nigeria is among 15 countries affected by the partial restrictions, alongside Angola, Senegal, Benin and others in Africa and the Caribbean. The White House said the measures could be reviewed, modified or lifted depending on future security and vetting assessments.
