Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde says he is qualified to lead Nigeria, citing his experience in public office and the private sector. The governor made the remarks while speaking with selected journalists during a media parley in Ibadan on Tuesday, amid growing reports of his interest in the presidency.
Governor Makinde, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, said his record as a two term governor of Oyo State and his background as an engineer prepared him for higher office. He said he had also run a private company and worked with multinational oil firms, including Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron.
With more than a year to the next general election, the governor said it was too early to focus on the presidential race. He said Nigerians want a strong democracy with credible opposition parties, and criticised the defection of governors and other politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Governor Makinde, who supported President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 election, said he would not do so again in 2027. He said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was free to support President Tinubu, but added that his own priority was the survival and rebuilding of the Peoples Democratic Party.
