Peter Obi, Other South-East leaders defect to ADC in Enugu

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has formally declared for the African Democratic Congress, alongside several political leaders from Nigeria’s South-East. The declaration was made on Wednesday in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, following what the group described as months of consultations.

Those present included former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, Sam Egwu and Enyinnaya Abaribe, as well as other serving and former lawmakers. Also in attendance were the ADC National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark, former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, and other opposition figures from across the country.

Speaking at the event, Mr Obi said the decision to join the ADC was aimed at uniting opposition forces to address what he described as poor governance under the All Progressives Congress. He said the move marked the beginning of a new political direction focused on inclusive socio-economic development and national unity.

Mr Obi also warned against any attempt to rig the 2027 general elections, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission to strictly adhere to electoral rules. He stressed the need for stronger institutions and greater cooperation among opposition parties, as Nigeria prepares for the next electoral cycle.
