State police should begin after 2027 polls, Obi suggests

NDC Presidential Candidate Peter Obi Says He Would Negotiate With Bandits Willing to Embrace Peace

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has called for the implementation of state police to be postponed until after the 2027 general election.

In a statement on Friday, Obi welcomed the Senate’s passage of the constitutional amendment bill to establish state police, describing it as an important step towards tackling insecurity. However, he said the process required broader public consultation and stronger legislative safeguards.

The former Anambra State governor expressed concern that state police could be used for political purposes if placed under the control of state governors. He called for the creation of independent state Police Service Commissions free from executive influence to provide oversight.

Obi said delaying implementation until after the 2027 elections would help prevent any perception that the new policing system could be used to influence the electoral process.
