Court Refuses Bail for Bauchi Finance Commissioner in Terrorism Financing Case

A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to grant bail to Yakubu Adamu, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Finance, who is standing trial over alleged terrorism financing amounting to 9.7 million dollars. The court also denied bail to three other defendants charged alongside him.

Delivering the ruling on Monday, the presiding judge, Emeka Nwite, said the offences posed a serious threat to national security and public safety, adding that terrorism-related charges undermine social order and could endanger the public if the accused were released pending trial.

Justice Nwite said he had considered the constitutional presumption of innocence but stressed that bail decisions must also take into account the nature of the offence, the strength of the evidence, the severity of the punishment and the likelihood of the defendants standing trial. He ordered an accelerated hearing of the case in the interest of justice and adjourned until January 13 for the commencement of trial.
