Oba of Badagry, Babatunde Akran, dies at 89

The Oba of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi the First, has died at the age of eighty-nine. His death was announced on Monday by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a statement.

Oba Akran, who reigned for nearly forty-nine years, was the permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. Governor Sanwo-Olu described him as a respected monarch known for wisdom, cultural preservation and advocacy for the development of Badagry, saying his passing was a major loss to Lagos State and Nigeria.

The governor commiserated with the people of Badagry and the royal family, noting that the late monarch was a stabilising force who promoted unity, tourism and cultural heritage. He said Oba Akran left behind a lasting legacy as custodian of Badagry’s traditions and prayed for strength for the people to bear the loss.
