Real Madrid have parted ways with head coach Xabi Alonso by mutual consent, just a day after their 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The club announced on Monday that Alvaro Arbeloa has been promoted from the reserve side, Castilla, to take over immediately.
Despite winning 10 of his first 11 La Liga matches, pressure mounted following a series of losses late in 2025 and reports of strained relations with some players, including public complaints from forward Vinicius Junior.
In a statement, Real Madrid thanked Alonso for his service and described him as a club legend who would always have the admiration of the fans. The club said he had consistently represented its values and wished him well in the next phase of his career.

His replacement, Arbeloa, is a former Real Madrid defender who made 238 appearances for the club. The 42-year-old will take charge of his first match on Wednesday when Madrid face Albacete in the Copa del Rey last-16.
