Vinicius Fires Real Madrid to Victory at Sevilla

Vinicius Junior earned Real Madrid a 1-0 win at Sevilla on Sunday in La Liga in the penultimate round of fixtures, but results elsewhere mean the hosts have secured safety from relegation. After Kylian Mbappe complained midweek that he had been told by coach Alvaro Arbeloa he was Madrid’s fourth forward after coming on as a substitute against Real Oviedo, the French superstar started against Sevilla and teed up his strike partner Vinicius to send Madrid ahead in Andalusia.

Vinicius brought down a cross from Mbappe and powered the ball home to give Madrid the lead. Vinicius returned the favour in the second half, but Mbappe blazed over the bar when well placed, and Franco Mastantuono hit the post for the visitors from outside the box as Madrid sought a second goal.

Real Madrid will finish the season without a major trophy for the second year running, but produced a focused display to beat Sevilla. Mbappe rounded the goalkeeper and slid home late in the match, but was flagged offside, and the goal was disallowed.

Coach Alvaro Arbeloa said after the match that today it was Vini’s turn to score, but Kylian did a great job, and expressed satisfaction with all his players despite the team not meeting their objectives this season. The victory keeps Madrid in contention for second place, depending on other results.
