Germany’s government has ruled out a boycott of the football World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, scheduled for June 11 to July 19. Government spokesman Steffen Meyer said political disputes should be resolved at the political level, and sport should remain unaffected.
The decision follows tensions over US President Donald Trump’s previous threats to annex Greenland, which had prompted some German politicians to question participation. Trump later withdrew tariff threats and abandoned plans to take the Arctic island by force after reaching a “framework” agreement with NATO chief Mark Rutte.

German Sports Minister Christiane Schenderlein also confirmed the government does not support a boycott, stressing that sport should not be exploited for political purposes. Berlin had previously left the decision to Germany’s football association, which is now free to take part in the tournament.
