The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, has said that money does not guarantee happiness, sparking widespread debate online. The Tesla chief executive made the remark on Thursday in a post on X, where he wrote that whoever said money cannot buy happiness knew what they were talking about.
The post attracted more than 33 million views, about 26,000 reposts and thousands of comments, with users expressing mixed reactions. While some agreed that wealth does not shield people from personal struggles, others argued that money significantly improves quality of life. Musk did not provide further explanation for the statement.

Musk’s comment comes amid continued public attention on his business empire and personal wealth. In December 2025, he became the first person to reach a net worth of 638 billion dollars, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, after his wealth rose by more than 40 percent within a year, driven largely by movements in Tesla shares.
