House of Representatives advances bill for Local Government Electoral Commission

The House of Representatives has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise dual membership of political parties.

The amendment was passed during plenary on Wednesday and introduces new provisions to Section 77 of the law dealing with party membership.

Under the proposed changes, anyone found to be registered in more than one political party at the same time will have the memberships declared void and will no longer be recognised as a valid member of any party until the situation is regularised.
