A Federal High Court in Akure has ruled that Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa cannot seek reelection in 2028. The court said another term would violate constitutional limits on tenure in office.
The case was filed by Akin Egbuwalo, a member of the All Progressives Congress. He asked the court to interpret provisions of the 1999 Constitution on the governor’s eligibility.
The judge ruled that the Constitution does not allow a president or governor to remain in office for more than eight years. Some defendants in the case did not participate in the hearing, and their processes were treated as abandoned.

Aiyedatiwa became governor in December 2023 after the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. He later won the 2024 governorship election and was sworn in for a fresh term in February 2025.
