Ondo Attorney General Welcomes Conviction of Four Over Owo Church Attack

The Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo (SAN), has welcomed the Federal High Court judgment in Abuja, which found four individuals guilty for their involvement in the deadly attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.

In a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, Ajulo described the verdict as a landmark victory for justice and a clear signal that terrorism and violent extremism will not be allowed to prevail, marking a significant milestone in the long and painful journey towards justice for the innocent worshippers whose lives were brutally cut short during the Pentecost Sunday massacre.

Ajulo said Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa remains committed to strengthening security across the state, protecting freedom of worship, and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice regardless of their affiliations. He added that his thoughts and prayers remain with the families of those who lost their loved ones, and that the memory of the departed shall never be forgotten.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had convicted four out of five suspects initially arraigned on all nine counts preferred against them by the federal government. The suspects were arraigned on August 11, 2022, on a nine-count terrorism charge. Presiding Judge Emeka Nwite held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt against Idris Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, and Abdulhaleem Idris, while a fifth suspect, Momoh Otuho Abubakar, was discharged for lack of evidence. The court sentenced the four convicted defendants to death by hanging.
