ADC says El-Rufai’s detention violates human rights

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as a violation of his human rights. The party says the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Offences Commission (ICPC) has held him in custody for over 30 days.

In a statement, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the detention is illegal and unconstitutional. He alleged that it is an attempt to pressure El-Rufai to abandon his political choices and affiliations.

The party called on the anti-corruption agency to either release him immediately or charge him in court to allow him to prepare his defence. It also warned that prolonged detention without trial undermines democratic principles and the rule of law.

The ADC says it will petition Amnesty International and other human rights organisations if the situation continues. The party also urged authorities to respect constitutional provisions and ensure justice is upheld.
